Copper Prices: How Much Is Copper Per Pound and Per Kg?

Copper prices move daily — sometimes hourly — based on global supply and demand, exchange rates, energy costs, and trading activity on the world's copper exchanges. If you've searched "copper price per pound," "copper price per kg today," or "how much does a copper sheet cost," this guide explains where those numbers come from and, just as important, why the exchange price is not the same as what you'll actually pay for copper sheet, tube, or handmade copper cookware.

Who Sets the Price of Copper?

Two exchanges anchor the global copper price:

• COMEX (CME Group) — the primary US benchmark, quoted in US dollars per pound (lb).
• London Metal Exchange (LME) — the primary international/European benchmark, quoted in US dollars per metric tonne, with official prices set twice a day (the Ring and Kerb sessions).

Neither figure is the price you pay at checkout. The retail or wholesale price of physical copper also depends on:

• Purity of the copper
• Thickness/gauge (for sheet) or wall thickness (for tube)
• Manufacturing and labor costs
• Energy costs
• Freight and logistics
• Supplier margin
• Local currency exchange rates (EUR, GBP, etc. against USD)

How to Calculate the Copper Price (Worked Example)

US / COMEX method (price per pound):

Price per pound is quoted directly on COMEX. To convert to price per kg: USD/kg = USD/lb × 2.20462

International / LME method (price per tonne):

USD/kg = LME price (USD/tonne) ÷ 1,000

Worked example, using late-August 2026 market levels:

• COMEX spot: ≈ $6.58 per pound → ≈ $6.58 × 2.20462 ≈ $14.50 per kg
• LME three-month copper: ≈ $14,350 per tonne → ÷ 1,000 ≈ $14.35 per kg

The two benchmarks track closely, which is expected since they price the same underlying commodity through different exchanges and units.

This exchange-derived number is the raw metal benchmark, not the price of a finished copper sheet or product — rolling, cutting, labor, warehousing, and freight are added on top.

Why Do Copper Prices Keep Changing?

Copper is used in electrical wiring, motors, renewable energy systems, EVs, construction, HVAC, and electronics — which makes it one of the most closely watched industrial "barometer" metals, sometimes nicknamed "Dr. Copper" for how closely its price tracks global economic health. Prices respond to:

• Mine supply disruptions (Chile, Peru, and the DRC together account for a large share of global output)
• LME and COMEX inventory levels
• Industrial demand from China, the US, and Europe
• EV and renewable-energy buildout (a single battery-electric vehicle uses roughly 130–180 lb / 60–80 kg of copper — several times more than a combustion engine vehicle)
• Interest rates and the strength of the US dollar

How Is Copper Sheet Weight and Price Calculated?

Copper sheet pricing isn't just the per-kg or per-lb price multiplied by weight — thickness, dimensions, temper, finish, and order volume all matter.

To calculate sheet weight, use copper's density, ≈ 8.96 g/cm³ (≈ 0.324 lb/in³):

Weight = Length × Width × Thickness × 8.96 g/cm³

Example: a 1 mm-thick copper sheet weighs approximately 8.96 kg per square meter (roughly 1.84 lb per square foot). Multiply that weight by the per-kg (or per-lb) copper price, then add cutting, labor, scrap loss, and freight to estimate the finished cost.

Why Does a Copper Pan Cost More Than the Metal Inside It?

The price of a copper pan, pot, or tray is not simply "weight × metal price." For handmade copper cookware in particular, the manufacturing process is often the larger cost driver:

Raw copper + labor + hand-forming + hammering + tinning/lining + handle fitting + cutting + material loss + packaging + shipping

Copper-Plated vs. Solid Copper: Know the Difference

Before comparing prices, confirm what you're actually buying:

• Copper-plated (copper-coated): the base material is a different metal, with only a thin copper layer on the surface.
• Solid / pure copper: the entire body of the item is copper — this is how genuine Turkish hand-hammered copperware, including ours, is made.

Comparing a copper-plated item's price to a solid copper item's price isn't an apples-to-apples comparison, regardless of what the per-kg number suggests.
